“Because those four days in the mountains, they changed us. I gave you a piece of me. And you must have given me a piece of yourself, too, because you wouldn't have come here otherwise. You would have let go. I can't let go of you, Britt. And I don't want you to let go of me.”
Mason in Black Ice
Britt spent months training to take a trip into the mountains of Wyoming, expecting that the biggest challenge she would face is conquering the mountain ranges and the equally treacherous terrain of her relationship with ex-boyfriend Calvin, who would also be on the trip. After getting caught in a snowstorm and taking shelter in a cabin belonging to two young men in the depth of the mountains, Britt finds that being held hostage will be most challenging of all. Or perhaps it will being trying not to fall for her handsome captor, Mason.
Becca Fitzpatrick's Hush Hush is my ultimate guilty-pleasure read, and I expected the same simultaneously dark and sappy romance from Black Ice. But Black Ice wasn't sexy like Hush Hush, nor particularly emotional. This novel was intriguing and fast-paced instead: still very much a guilty-pleasure, but not of the same variety as her previous series. If you're looking for a weekend novel that throws you a curve-ball, Black Ice will provide it; but if you're looking for the same irresistible quality as Hush Hush, look elsewhere.
