Molly Barlow ran from her problems last time she got caught up with the Donnelly brothers. After her whole home town found out that she slept with one (Gabe) while seriously dating the other (Patrick), she returns as an outcast. "99 days until college" is the mantra she uses to endure it, as well as Gabe's loyal company. But her rekindling romance with one brother is putting her in the path of the other again. Her 99 days back home might feel a little bit longer for Molly as she reinvolves herself in this toxic love triangle.
Can we first establish that Molly Barlow and the Donnelly brothers are all total assholes? I cannot bring myself to condone the behavior of any of them the first or second time around. I found that this fact made it really difficult to read or enjoy 99 Days because my lack of acceptance of their actions led to my lack of understanding of what they were going through. I could not empathize because I was too busy judging the grotesque actions. However, the book explored one thing that I could very much support: the exposing of a society that shames only the female in sexual situations. Contugno shows that, though Gabe and Patrick are performing the same things, only Molly is suffering. Even though I hate her too, this is something I can understand and relate to as a female. All in all, entertaining as this was to read, 99 Days was messed up from page 1.
