"I didn't fall for you, you tripped me!"
Lara Jean in To All The Boys I've Loved Before
Lara Jean made it a ritual to write letters to each boy that she's had feelings for since middle school, never to deliver, but just to finalize her feels and lock away for future reference. When her dad accidentally sends them to the 5 boys, Lara Jean finds herself having to pick up the pieces, specifically with Josh, a family friend who she still has feelings for. Problematically, Josh recently ended a long-term relationship with her older sister, Margot. In order to reassemble her relationship with Josh, Lara Jean agrees to enter a fake romance with Peter, another recipient of one of her letters. The situation only complicates more a Lara Jean finds herself falling for Peter all over again.
I would like to first address the adorable, dreamy, cover of this novel. Judging a book by its cover would have been a great way to pick up To All The Boys I've Loves Before. Another way to pick it up would be to recognize that JENNY HAN wrote it, aka the mastermind behind melting teenage girl's hearts with The Summer I Turned Pretty books. She's still good at what she does, folks.
To All The Boys I've Loved Before is uniquely typical and fantastic. The narrator, Miss Lara Jean herself, did not make me want to punch her in the face. The plot, though not particularly different from any other book of its kind, was enough to encourage me to plow through it in a day. Even Peter, who in real life would never choose a girl like Lara Jean to "fake-date" was charming and dimensional and believable enough for the cocky, jock stereotype he was suppose to fit.
To All The Boys I've Loved Before was as adorable and dreamy as its cover. It was exactly the easy romance I needed this week. Go you, Jenny Han. Please, keep melting my heart.
